Signed W Hawken, William Hawken, Hagerstown, MD ca 1820

No other name in early gunmaking is more respected than the name Hawken. Here is a signed rifle by William, Christian's 5th son. William stayed in Hagerstown working with his father and took over the business when his father died in 1821. This example was made early in William's career as it is very similar to one of Christian's last rifles.

The curly maple is of the best quality with exotic grain in the butt stock. Early style forestock molding is present as well as lower butt molding. The patchbox is typical of the Hagerstown school with piercings and nice engraving. The lock is a good reconversion and is original to the rifle. The 42.25" barrel is the original length and about .44 cal. All mounts including the brass tipped barrel wedges are original. Of interest is the magnificently engraved eagle cheek piece inlay with 13 punched stars.

Minor wood restoration on the lock mortice is the only apology; it is nearly invisible. The level of decoration, the condition, and the desireable family name of this rifle make it a rarity amoung Maryland rifles.
