SOLD Unsigned Leonard Reedy, Womelsorf, PA ca 1800

Leonard Reedy apprenticed with John Bonewitz beginning in 1790. They both moved to Pine Grove in 1809. Reedy's work is similar to Bonewitz' in quality and artistic design both using te same patchbox designs. Reedy only signed about 5 rifles, one being a swivel breech example in the Kindig Collection which was accompanied by an account book of Reedy's daily work.

This is one of the earlier Reedy rifles with a generous butt and an early lock. The lock is original to the rifle and has an excellent reconversion. The original length 43" rifled barrel is about .54 cal and has deep rifling grooves; another early detail. Excellent curly maple appears on the entire rifle. Restoration is almost limited to the forestock 2 ramrod pipes and fore end cap but about an inch of the toe plate was restored.

Fine relief carving in his typical style is found on the cheekpiece and barrel tang. Though restored the rifle exhibits an early example with excellent curly maple, relief carving, and an his most desirable patchbox design. The price is reasonable for a great rifle with excellent restoration.
